If you’ve heard the word Palestine on the news, you’ve probably heard a few other words associated to it: Violence. Occupation. Victim.
We think it’s about time to tell a different story.
“This is Palestine” is a week-long celebration of Palestinian culture, creativity and accomplishment.
From Palestinian hip hop, dance theatre, poetry, comedy and music to paintings, photography, jewelry and furniture, we are bringing the real Palestine to Dubai March 12-19, 2014.
The most iconic painting in the Arab world - Jamal Al-Mahamel, which shows a porter carrying Jerusalem on his back - will be exhibited and put up for auction.
It’s one of the biggest Palestinian cultural events ever put on – no one has ever attempted to bring such a diversity of Palestinian art and design under one roof. And we hope it will be the first stepping stone to building a positive national brand.
We are tired of being victims. We’d rather be accomplished painters or creative performers. Welcome to a whole new world: This is Palestine. Experience the Unknown.

"A Camp" by Gazan artist Dina Mattar - one of the many paintings that will be on display and up for sale
"They are painting with colours they don't have," famous Egyptian actor Hussein Fahmy once said about artists in Palestine.
In addition to contributing to the global movement to rebrand Palestine, by supporting this event you are empowering more than 200 artists who will perform or display their art at the event.
This is not a charity event. All performing artists will be paid and all works of art and design will be for sale. This will help struggling artists financially, but also in the development of their careers.
But if that isn't enough to convince you, check out the amazing rewards we're giving out, including tickets to the performances and limited edition lithographs of Jamal Al-Mahamel.
PLEASE NOTE: You will receive tickets to the performance of your choice, subject to availability. Once you make your contribution, you will be asked by Aflamnah to indicate your preferred show. Aflamnah will confirm with you whether tickets are available to that show. You will then use your Aflamnah voucher to redeem your ticket at the venue on performance day. Those contributing from out of country will be contacted after the event to arrange shipping of their artworks, t-shirts and posters.
If you want to help but do not want a reward, you can contribute anonymously or inform Aflamnah that you are not interested in the tickets when they contact you.
We're trying to do something big! But we need your help. Join us on the journey.
Here's a look at the festival programme. Tickets go on sale to the general public on March 1st. Until then, you can get your hands on tickets exclusively through the packages offered on this crowd-funding site. Check out the amazing rewards for your contributions!

To put this event on we need close to $500,000.
The bulk of our costs is renting out the world-class venue. And because we believe in empowering Palestinian artists, all the performers will be flown in, accomodated and paid. In addition, we have logistical expenses, such as shipping in the artwork, paying ticket taxes to the municipal government, and printing some of the promotional material.
We have raised some of that amount through sponsorship and will recuperate some of it through ticket sales, but even so, we are unlikely to break even. So we need your help! We'd like everyone to be part of this event in some way - no matter what the size of your contribution!
THIS IS PALESTINE is the brainchild of Alhoush.com.
The word alhoush means "courtyard" in Arabic. It is a place that has always been central to households in the Near East, as the meeting point that gathers family members around a physical and moral space.
Alhoush.com is both a physical and virtual expo of Arab art and design: a common space that allows the public to purchase from and interact with the design and art community.
We achieve our objectives through two primary tracks:
• By creating an international expo and forum that will not only attract all the successful and emerging designers and artists to discuss the latest developments, but will also sell their works in a massive annual event;
• By creating an extensive e-commerce web portal where the works will be sold and shipped around the world
With over 500 registered artists (320 published), 3000 works, 28,000 pages of content, and 28,000 fans on Facebook, Alhoush.com has already become the premier initiative for the preservation and development of Arab art and design.
We cover four areas:
• art (such as painting, print and sculpture)
• furniture and accessories
• fashion design (such as clothing, accessories, jewelry)
• community empowerment projects
Alhoush.com is not only about empowering the designer and art community in the Arab world, but also about serving as a catalyst for creating a creative economy for them and shedding light on their tremendous achievements. It creates a common space for innovation in Arab art and design in a way that allows it to take its rightful and well-deserved place in the world.
