About this IDEA

Nawaf, a high school graduate, is under pressure to pick a major in college in three weeks' time, while he has no clue about what to do about his future. Nawaf finds himself in an abandoned city neighborhood, where a huge crowd of people assemble and start to follow him. Nawaf's friends have all picked something based on their parents' desires, or their financial needs, or based on what the job market is demanding. Nawaf finds himself in the old city neighborhood again, this time a mysterious figure shows up, and Nawaf starts following the figure. Nawaf's dad wants him to be a doctor, while his counselor strongly recommends he pursues architecture, his brother's friends think the world of banking is the best route to success, and his uncles want him to join their family business. While Nawaf roams Jeddah to find an answer or an inspiration, the crowd of people find him again and catches up to him. Nawaf also finds the mysterious figure again, and catches up to her.

Why is this idea important?

This idea offers an important extension to the discussion of who we are, what drives us, and what inspires us as individuals in this community. The Saudi story is missing from the world cinema landscape, and this is just a little glimpse into our similar world, with its familiar problems, and universal anxieties. This film presents the issue of a generation that is stuck between having the luxury to wonder about what choice they want to make in life and a solidly established way of life they have to adhere to. Nawaf is each one of us; looking for meaning in life, and for something that represents a sense of belonging. He's looking for a metaphorical home.. in his literal one.

What is the funding for?

The Funding for this project will go towards: Insuring that everyone is fed and happy and has means of transportation.The top priority after that will go towards art direction and production design, one of the most important aspects of the film.A portion will go towards renting equipment that can help us to nicely capture the hard work everyone is doing and put it on the big screen.Then, the fund will go towards securing key locations that are important to the story. Finally, the fund will insure paying for extras to reflect Jeddah's diversity and cosmopolitan nature.

About Abdulrahman Khawj

A philosopher at heart, an architect in the head, a short story writer when moody, an essayist when angry, a poet when mesmerized, hungry when inspired, and a filmmaker all the while. Abdulrahman majored in architecture for his undergraduate degree, then morphed his career into filmmaking by pursuing his MFA in film directing and screenwriting to trace his growing fascination and appreciation for cinema. Two of his short films won best screenplay awards at short film festivals in the United States. His last short film, I AM (can you make this in Italics?), screened in the shorts competition at the last edition of the Dubai International Film Festival, 2015. Two of his feature screenplays were candidates for the Sundance International Screenwriting Lab, 2016. One of which is The Great Muse, his first feature film, which will shoot in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia This August.
